Fabric for your Medlow

Fabric for your Medlow

We've got lots of fabric questions about our new Medlow Robe, which we added to our Loungewear Collection this week!

The Medlow is designed to work in a variety of fabric, including chunky ones, today we'll be rounding up some of our favourite fabric choices!

Leila used a heavyweight tencel twill for her Medlow Robe (above) and my red robe is silk crepe de chine (below).

Fabrics for your Medlow Robe

Designed to be sewn with a wide variety of woven fabrics, changing up the fabric choice is a great way to get the most from your pattern!

Slippery & slinky fabrics

Tencel twill, silk charmeuse, and silk crepe de chine would all make for delightfully slinky robes. Leila used a heavyweight tencel twill for her copper robe and my red robe is silk crepe de chine.

Blackbird Tencel (CA), Liberty Fabric silk (UK), Esce-Tex Tencel blends, (US), Rijs Textile Tencel (EU), and Drapers Fabrics silk (AU & NZ) would all make great choices!

Noil for texture

If you're wanting silk without the slink factor, or just after an elevated texture, then perhaps a silk noil, linen noil, or noil blend is for you!

We love the silk noil from A+R Fabrics in Australia, but Sister Mintaka (UK) has a range of noils, as does Winnipeg Sews (CAD) and Spool of Thread (CAD)

Luxe day-spa robe

For a day-spa style robe that you know is going to fit, consider using terry towelling, or a waffle weave fabric! You don't just have to stick to white though, these fabrics come in lots of fun colours!

For waffle, check out Empress Mills' range of colours (UK), Simplifi Fabrics (CA), Rijs Textiles (EU) and there's always lots of options on Etsy. For terry see, Fabric Traders (AU), Empress Mills (UK), StoffStil (EU).

Cosy cool weather robe

The generous seam-allowances in the Medlow Robe are there to accommodate cosy fabrics with extra heft! We suggest cotton flannel/flannellette, sherpa, and polar fleece- if the texture appeals to you then a minky fabric would also work! Double-gauze or wool gauzes would also make a surprisingly cosy robe!

Maker Mountain Fabric (US) stocks the large-scale patterned Mammoth Flannel, Simplifi Fabrics (CA) has organic flannel, Hawthorne Supply Co (US) has a huge selection of plain and yarn-dyed plaid flannel.

Lightweight & relaxed robe

Linen and cotton lawn would make for lovely robes that can look casual and relaxed, or elevated and crisp, depending on your fabric choice!

Check out the range of solid-coloured linen at A+R Fabrics (AU), the range at Blackbird Fabrics (CA), and the enzyme-washed linens at Sew Me Sunshine (UK).

For patterned linens & linen blends, we love this green squiggle linen from Winnipeg Sews (CA), and this large-scale check from A+R Fabrics (AU), and this minimalist b&w linen from Potter & Co (AU), and the textured jacquards from Sister Mintaka (UK)

Lady McElroy (UK), Liberty Fabrics (UK) both have a huge variety of patterned cotton lawns. We also love this red & pink cotton from Potter & Co (AU), and would all make great choices for cotton lawn. This cotton seersucker from Seamstress Fabrics (AU) would also be lovely.
